HDS-9 LIVE or ECHOMAP Ultra 106sv

About Review Marine - Rodney on Deck of the HUNA Flying the Drone

Key Differences

Both are excellent fishfinder/chart plotters, but they do differ somewhat in their capabilities.

The Ultra 106sv is an excellent chart plotter with serious 600W Ultra Hi-Definition sonar fish-finding capabilities. It also comes loaded with a very solid charting package with the BlueChart g3 U.S. coastal LakeVü g3 inland + Navionics.

The screen is a little bit bigger, it has a bit more waypoint storage, and offers support for an external GPS antenna.

The HDS-9 LIVE  is more of a full network chartplotter with excellent fishfinder capabilities and a very crisp clear screen.  It also supports  Halo Series Radar and puts out 1KW of sonar power.

Which one do I choose?

Should I upgrade to an HDS-9 LIVE or ECHOMAP Ultra 106sv?

Both the Lowrance HDS-9 LIVE and Garmin ECHOMAP Ultra 106sv are excellent choices and offer all the features necessary for serious anglers.

The choice between the two will depend on individual preferences regarding display size, specific sonar capabilities, mapping options, and whether or not you plan to use radar.

If possible try and play with both of them to see which one you like better.

Pay close attention to how easy it is to use and be sure to look at the charts and mapping for your area and see if the detail is any better on one or the other.

► ECHOMAP Ultra 106sv– I like the Garmin charts a little bit more and the user interface feels a little easier to use for me, however, I’ve had other people say exactly the opposite.

Also, if you decide on the Ultra 106sv, make sure you choose the newer GT56 transducer for much better down & side imaging.

► The HDS-9 LIVE  – It’s a solid unit. It has just a slightly smaller screen, supports radar and it is very crisp and easy to read. If you have had Lowrance or have experience with them, then sticking with what you know is often the best choice.

If you do a lot of offshore fishing, the HDS-9 LIVE 1KW sonar output would be a big plus.

Also, keep in mind trolling motor support. HDS-9 LIVE is Ghost Trolling Motor and Garmin is Force.

Pro Tip: Although these models aren’t current, they are always available on the secondary market, new and used, and both are awesome units.
